Schema Therapy

Have you ever noticed that certain patterns in your life keep repeating, like choosing similar partners, reacting really strongly to certain situations, or feeling alone even when people care about you?

Schema Therapy

Have you ever noticed that certain patterns in your life keep repeating, like choosing similar partners, reacting really strongly to certain situations, or feeling alone even when people care about you? Schema Therapy is a type of therapy that helps you understand where these patterns come from and how to change them.

Schema Therapy is a warm, relationship focused approach that helps you heal long-standing emotional patterns. These patterns, called schemas, often begin in childhood and can continue to affect how you feel, think, and act as an adult. Schema Therapy gives you tools to understand these patterns and to build healthier ones.

Schemas are like emotional themes that live inside us. They form early in life and can influence how we see ourselves, how we relate to others, and how we interpret situations.
For example, if you grew up feeling like people were unpredictable or might leave, you may have developed an Abandonment Schema. As an adult, this can make relationships feel insecure, even when no one is actually stepping away.

Schemas are powerful because they’re not just thoughts they come with emotions, memories, and body sensations. They can make old experiences feel like they’re happening all over again.

Schemas usually form when some of our basic emotional needs weren’t met consistently. These needs include feeling safe, loved, accepted, respected, guided, and allowed to be ourselves. Every child has these needs, and when they aren’t met—whether through trauma, stress in the family, neglect, or even overly strict or overprotective parenting—children develop ways to cope. Those coping styles may have helped back then, but they can create challenges now.

Schema Therapy also talks about modes. Modes are the emotional “parts” of us that show up in certain situations. You might recognize some of the modes listed below in yourself:

In therapy, you and your therapist work together to strengthen your Healthy Adult so it can take better care of the vulnerable parts of you. Take a look at this worksheet, fill in what you can and bring it to your first therapy session.

Schema Therapy is not about blaming the past—it’s about understanding how it shaped you and learning new ways to meet your emotional needs today.
Your therapist will help you:

  • Notice your schemas and understand where they came from
  • Work through painful memories in a safe, supportive way
  • Practice new coping skills
  • Challenge unhelpful beliefs
  • Build healthier patterns in relationships
  • Develop a kinder, more caring inner voice

A big part of Schema Therapy is the therapeutic relationship. Your therapist provides a safe, supportive space sometimes called “limited reparenting”, to help you feel understood, valued, and emotionally held while you grow and heal.

Schema Therapy is a journey toward understanding yourself more deeply and breaking free from old patterns that no longer serve you. It helps you create a stronger, more compassionate inner foundation so you can build the life and relationships you truly want.
