About Us

Lifespan Psychology – The Diverse Practice® was founded in 2017 by Dr Esther Cole, whose personal journey through clinical psychology, parenthood, and long-term health conditions shaped a practice built on compassion, cultural understanding and evidence-based care.

Our Beginnings
2017

It’s been an exciting and unexpected journey. I founded Lifespan Psychology in 2017, when the business was just me in a small room in Wimbledon, London, on Kingston Road. At the time, I had recently had our second child and was working part-time alongside my NHS role in a Memory Service for older people, where I had flourished as a trainee clinical psychologist

A Turning Point
2019

By 2019, after 12 years in the NHS and with two small children, I could no longer juggle work, family life and co-editing a book — my health began to suffer. That summer, I was diagnosed with a genetic, chronic kidney condition and became bed- and home-bound for over a year, until I fell pregnant with our third child.

Unable to cope with the volume of referrals arriving by email from my hospital bed, I decided to send enquiries to other practitioners and began building a small team.

Recognition and Recovery
2020

As my pregnancy progressed, I began to feel slightly better each week. In February 2020, I became the first Black Clinical Psychologist to win the British Psychological Society (BPS) Early Career Award for my role as co-editor of Psychological Therapy for Paediatric Acquired Brain Injury (Routledge).

Although I had been unable to stand for much of our 2019 book launch, it took nearly two years before I finally received a second diagnosis — an underactive thyroid — during COVID, from the most amazing locum doctor. Miraculously, by 2021 I was able to return to work online as a psychologist.

Growing Into The Diverse Practice®
2021

Over the years, my team grew. I trademarked Lifespan Psychology – The Diverse Practice® to reflect our joy in working with people of all ages, stages and backgrounds. I have always been struck by the uniqueness of every individual — we are always learning as psychologists, even when we encounter common themes or diagnoses.

As a third-generation British Jamaican psychologist and a working mum of three managing long-term health conditions, my aim has always been to promote multi-award-winning, evidence-based, yet bespoke and culturally adapted psychological therapies. Our goal is to effectively treat or relieve the distress experienced by those living with trauma, physical or mental health difficulties and neurological conditions. I wanted my team to deliver truly tailor-made approaches that improve emotional wellbeing, everyday functioning, family life and relationships.

A Deep Understanding of Culture and Context
2021

In the words of Dr Riddhi Prajapati, who has been an Associate at Lifespan Psychology since 2021:

"We frequently work with individuals experiencing intergenerational trauma, social expectations and cultural or religious demands. Our diverse team brings a rich understanding of these issues that allow us to offer you a safe, open and non-judgmental space to explore these challenges and reconnect with yourself."

"There can be common themes related to cultural or religious pressures, gendered rules, social reputation and financial insecurity. These layers are complex to navigate and can make it difficult to balance different values, roles, and expectations across cultures and belief systems."
