Perinatal Depression

Perinatal depression is a mental health condition which is triggered in the months leading up to and after the birth of your baby. You’re told it is going to be one of the happiest moments in your life, yet you’re in pain and have a huge dip in hormones after giving birth called “the baby blues”. You miss your work colleagues, can’t sleep because baby had colic and struggles to settle, and you don’t know how to soothe them.

You feel trapped, low in mood and can’t access the life or support you once had, as you just don’t have the freedom. You don’t recognise yourself or who you are in the mirror.

For working fathers or co-partners, they miss the early months with limited paternity pay. Jobs are rarely as flexible as they need to be for childcare arrangements, and the cost of childcare skyrockets. But as a couple you don’t trust anyone to take care of your baby, do you?

For parents who’ve witnessed or experienced birth trauma, the wounds of postnatal depression are far deeper and can be linked to suicidal thoughts. In the following episode of Breaking Through Therapy, hear from “Kaly” who survived a near-death birth experience, which resulted in her sustaining physical injuries following the birth; and devastating brain injury in her new baby, born with forceps, who almost didn’t make it. Listen to parts 1 and 2 where Kaly and her toddler, “Georgia”, go through the most incredible journey with their psychotherapists to process and overcome trauma and thrive as a family post-COVID.
